Susanna Phillips sings Fiordiligi and Katharine Goeldner (in her company debut) is Dorabella; Norman Reinhardt (also making his house debut) plays Ferrando, with Mark Stone as Guglielmo. Susanne Mentzer takes the role of Despina, with Dale Travis as Don Alfonso.
A new production by acclaimed director Mark Lamos of Strauss's Daphne — which received its U.S. premiere at Santa Fe — opens on July 14. Fast-rising young Canadian soprano Erin Wall sings the title role, with Scott MacAllister as Apollo; both are making their Santa Fe debuts. Garrett Sorenson is Leukippos; Meredith Arwady and Matthew Best play Gaea and Peneios, Daphne's parents. Kenneth Montgomery conducts; choreography is by Sešn Curran.
Tan Dun's Tea: A Mirror of Soul receives its American premiere at Santa Fe beginning July 21. Haijing Fu plays the Japanese monk Seikyo, a role he performed in the 2002 world premiere production in Tokyo. Kelly Kaduce sings Lan, the Emperor's daughter; Nancy Maultsby plays Lu, the daughter of a tea-sage, and the Ritualist. Christian Van Horn is the Emperor, with Roger Honeywell as his son. Lawrence Renes, who conducted performances of Tea in Amsterdam in 2003, makes his house debut on the podium. Amon Miyamoto directs.
Beginning July 28, Santa Fe Opera presents its first Rameau work, the comedy Plat_e. Director Laurent Pelly adapts his well-known staging for the Paris Opera, with Harry Bicket conducting. High tenor and comic genius Jean-Paul Fouch_court makes his company debut as the titular swamp nymph, a role in which he has delighted audiences on three continents. Heidi Stober takes the roles of Thalia (muse of comedy) and Folly; Joshua Hopkins is Momus (god of mockery). Wilbur Pauley and Ariana Chris are Jupiter and Juno; Norman Leinhardt plays Mercury (the messenger god) and Thespis (the original thespian); Leena Chopra plays L'Amour (i.e. Cupid) and Plat_e's confidante Clarine.
