Atherton will play the role taken in the film of "Shock Treatment" by Jessica Harper, and played in the film of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" by Susan Sarandon. Atherton originated the roles of Kate Monster/Lucy the Slut in the original London cast of Avenue Q and also appeared as Sister Mary Robert in the first U.K tour of Sister Act: The Musical. She was recently seen on the London stage in the title role of Thérèse Raquin at the Finborough Theatre and the Park Theatre. Her third album "Rush of Life" was released at the end of 2014.
The cast will also feature Rosanna Hyland, recently seen in the West End in Urinetown, as Betty Hapschatt played by Ruby Wax in the 1981 film.
The show features music by Richard Hartley, lyrics by Richard O'Brien and a book by Jim Sharman. It has been adapted for the stage by Tom Crowley and Benji Sperring, the latter of whom also directs.
Predicting the rise of reality TV, Shock Treatment sees the return of Brad and Janet as they get sucked into a world of crazed contestants, fame-hungry presenters and money-grabbing executives both in front and behind the cameras.
The show is designed by Tim Shortall, with musical direction and arrangements by Alex Beetschen and choreography by Lucie Pankhurst.
