Rachel Bloom Nods to Playbill in Her Crazy Ex-Girlfriend | Playbill

News Rachel Bloom Nods to Playbill in Her Crazy Ex-Girlfriend The Emmy winner is a self-proclaimed musical theatre nerd—apparently, so is her character.

Creator and star of The CW’s Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Rachel Bloom was raised a musical theatre fan.

“I only listened to show tunes until I was 20 or 21 years old,” she says. “For my 19th birthday, I treated myself to a Christine Pedi concert at Birdland.”

Well that musical theatre fandom has translated into her character, Rebecca Bunch. In the November 11 episode from Season 2, Rebecca accidentally burned down her house and knocks on neighbor Heather Davis’ (Vella Lovell) door for a place to stay. To Rebecca’s surprise, Heather lives with her parents, who try to convince Rebecca they’ve met multiple times. “And I was the one who kept getting your Playbill magazine, remember?” asked Mrs. Davis, played by Christine Estabrook.

The musical comedy certainly reflects influences from theatre, and now we’ve got a direct connection.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend airs Fridays at 9 PM on The CW.
