Tony-winning producers Daryl Roth and Elizabeth McCann told the New York Times that they, along with producer Cody Lassen, would like to shepherd Paula Vogel's critically acclaimed Indecent to Broadway.
If a theatre becomes available, the producers hope to bring the work by the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of How I Learned to Drive to Broadway this season.
“We loved the play so much and feel compelled to make it happen so more people can see it,” Roth told the Times. “I don't know that it is a commercially successful offering, but I wish that it could be.”
The New York premiere of Indecent, a new play with music, written by Vogel and created by Vogel and Rebecca Taichman, officially opened its limited engagement at The Vineyard Theatre May 17. The work features music composed by Lisa Gutkin and Aaron Halva, and was inspired by the real-life controversy surrounding the 1923 Broadway production of Sholem Asch's God of Vengeance, the love story of two women.
Indecent had its world premiere in October 2015 at Yale Repertory Theatre. The original cast made the move Off-Broadway, including Katrina Lenk (Once), Mimi Lieber (Act One), Max Gordon Moore (Relatively Speaking), Tom Nelis (The Visit), Steven Rattazzi (The Fourth Sister), Richard Topol (Fish in the Dark) and Adina Verson (Him). Taichman returned to direct, and David Dorfman returned to choreograph.
In 1923, the reaction to Asch’s work was divided between those who considered it to be groundbreaking and by others as traitorous. “Indecent charts the history of an incendiary drama and the path of the artists who risked their careers and lives to perform it,” state press notes.
The Off-Broadway staging was presented in association with La Jolla Playhouse and Yale Repertory Theatre.
Indecent would mark the Broadway debut of playwright Vogel.
