Further principal casting has been announced for the West End premiere of Maltby and Shire’s Big The Musical, which will begin previews September 6 at the Dominion Theatre.
Joining the previously announced Jay McGuiness as Josh Baskin are Wendi Peters (Coronation Street, The Mystery of Edwin Drood) as Mrs. Baskin, Kimberly Walsh (Girls Aloud, Shrek) as Susan Lawrence, and Olivier Award winner Matthew Kelly (Of Mice and Men, Waiting for Godot) as George MacMillan.
Morgan Young directs and choreographs the production that officially opens September 17 for a limited run through November 2.
Based on the movie written by Gary Ross and Ann Spielberg, Big The Musical has music by David Shire, lyrics by Richard Maltby Jr., and a book by John Weidman.
The musical premiered on Broadway in 1996, running six months. The musical was significantly revised ahead of its 1997 national tour, which received positive reviews from critics.
The musical concerns 12-year-old Josh Baskin, who longs to be big. When a mysterious Zoltar machine grants his wish, he finds himself trapped inside an adult’s body and is forced to live and work in a grown-up world, but his childlike innocence has a transforming effect on the adults he encounters.
