Based on the 1980 film starring and directed by Clint Eastwood, the musical features a book by the film's screenwriter Dennis Hackin and a score by Chip Rosenbloom and John Torres, with Michele Brourman supplying additional lyrics. The work played a world premiere via Skylight Theatre Company in Los Angeles in 2019, later winning Ovation Awards for Best Book and Lyrics for an Original Musical.

Hunter Bird directs the West End staging after helming the Skylight world premiere, but the production otherwise features a new creative team, including scenic designer Amy Jane Cook, costume designer Sarah Mercade, choreographer Alexzandra Sarmiento, lighting designer Nick Richings, sound designer Andrew Johnson, music directior Marcus Carter-Adams, illusion designer John Bulleid, fight and intimacy directors Rachel Bown-WIlliams and Ruth Cooper-Brown of RC-Annie, and music supervisior and orchestrator David O.

Danny Hackin is associate producer, and casting is by Will Burton. Skylight Theatre Company Artistic Director Gary Grossman produces alongside Hartshorn - Hook Productions.

"I'm thrilled to be collaborating with this unbelievably talented company of performers to make this Wild West disco musical," said Bird in an earlier statement. "This heart-forward group is going to surprise and delight our audiences. Our show will include magic, tap dancing, lasso work, whip-cracking, gun twirling, juggling—and that's just Act One. We're endeavoring to make this show as joyful as possible, and this cast is the perfect group to take on that exuberant challenge. I cannot wait to be in the room with them."
