Patrick Page played his final performance as Hades in the Tony-winning Hadestown December 30 at the Walter Kerr Theatre.
Page, Tony-nominated for his performance as Hades, lord of the underworld, had been with the musical since early readings and workshops in 2015. He starred in each developmental production, including the world premiere at NYTW (2016), Edmonton’s Citadel Theatre (2017), London’s National Theatre (2018), and on Broadway (2019).
Following Hadestown, Page will take a short break before heading down to Washington, D.C. to star in King Lear at Shakespeare Theatre Company.

Tom Hewitt, who reopened Hadestown post-pandemic in September 2021 while Page finished a film commitment, will take over the role of Hades beginning January 3, 2023.
Anaïs Mitchell, the Tony-winning writer of Hadestown, said in an earlier statement, “Patrick’s Hades was terrifying, funny, vulnerable, even lovable. As a writer I learned so much from Patrick, about his character and about drama itself. His miraculous voice, his electrifying intelligence, and honesty will be sorely missed both on and offstage. Eternal gratitude to you, Patrick, can’t wait to see what you do next.”
Page added, “Hadestown has been one of the greatest blessings of my life. Over the past seven years I have had a front-row seat to the genius of Anaïs Mitchell and Rachel Chavkin as the show evolved from its initial production Off-Broadway through its Canadian and British incarnations and now, on Broadway. I will always be connected to the character of Hades in some way–but it’s time to move on. I’m grateful beyond measure.”
The Broadway cast also features Jewelle Blackman as Persephone, Grammy winner Reeve Carney as Orpheus, two-time Tony nominee Eva Noblezada as Eurydice, and Tony winner Lillias White with Amelia Cormack, Soara-Joye Ross, and Shea Renne as the Fates. The chorus of Workers is played by Emily Afton, Malcolm Armwood, Alex Puette, Trent Saunders, and Grace Yoo, and the swings are Brandon Cameron, Tara Jackson, Max Kumangai, and Yael "YaYa" Reich.
Singer-songwriter Mitchell’s folk- and jazz-infused musical layers the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice with that of Hades and Persephone, intertwining the actions—and consequences—of gods and mortals. Hadestown originally began as a theatrical concert performed by Mitchell.
The creative team features Tony-winning director Rachel Chavkin, Tony-winning set designer Rachel Hauck, Tony-nominated costume designer Michael Krass, Tony-winning lighting designer Bradley King, Tony-winning sound designers Nevin Steinberg and Jessica Paz, choreographer David Neumann, and dramaturg Ken Cerniglia. Musical supervision and vocal arrangements are by Liam Robinson, with arrangements and orchestrations by Tony winners Michael Chorney and Todd Sickafoose.
