Oscar winner Jessica Chastain (The Eyes of Tammy Faye) returns to Broadway February 13 in The Jamie Lloyd Company's revival of Henrik Ibsen's 1879 landmark drama A Doll's House. The limited 16-week engagement will officially open at Broadway’s Hudson Theatre March 9.
Chastain plays Nora Helmer in the Jamie Lloyd-directed production of the play—about a housewife who makes the then-earth-shattering decision to leave her husband and family behind—featuring a new version penned by Amy Herzog.
She is joined by Tony and Emmy nominee Arian Moayed (Succession on HBO, Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo) as Torvald Helmer, Jesmille Darbouze (Betrayal) as Kristine Linde, Tasha Lawrence (Good People) as Anne-Marie, Michael Patrick Thornton (Macbeth) as Dr. Rank, and Grammy winner Okieriete Onaodowan (Hamillton) as Nils Krogstad. Understudies are Franklin Bongjio, Carey Rebecca Brown, Melisa Soledad Pereyra, and Jose Joaquin Perez.
Chastain, who made her Broadway debut in the 2012 revival of The Heiress, said in an earlier statement, “When I sat down with the brilliant Jamie Lloyd five years ago to discuss a possible collaboration, I was over the moon when we decided on A Doll’s House. We were set to start rehearsals in London in April 2020, but little did we know what the world (and a pandemic) had in store for us. While home in New York, walking around the empty theatre district made my heart hurt. New York has been my home for over 20 years, and it’s immensely important to me to take care of this city and support my artist neighbors.
"So, I couldn’t be happier to play Nora in A Doll’s House on Broadway! I’m very excited to work with Jamie and the incredible Amy Herzog in this city that formed me. I hope in the future to work in the West End, but for now I can’t wait to be together with all of the wonderful people of New York and my artistic community on Broadway.”
Chastain was also Oscar-nominated for her work in Zero Dark Thirty and The Help.
The creative team also includes scenic designer and costume co-designer Soutra Gilmour, costume co-designer Enver Chakartash, lighting designer Jon Clark, sound designers Ben and Max Ringham, composers Ryuichi Sakamoto and Alva Noto, dance choreographer Jennifer Rias, casting directors Jim Carnahan Casting and Alexandre Bleau, production stage manager Frank Lombardi, stage manager Brandon Allmon-Jackson, general manager 101 Productions, associate director Jonathan Glew, associate scenic designers Michael Carnahan and Wilson Chin, associate costume designer Ricky Lurie, associate lighting designer Domino Mannheim, and associate sound designer Chris Cronin.
A Doll's House was last revived on Broadway in 1997 co-starring Janet McTeer and Owen Teale, who both won Tony Awards for their performances. The production also earned Tonys for Best Revival of a Play and Best Direction of a Play (Anthony Page).
The Jamie Lloyd Company production of A Doll’s House is produced on Broadway by Ambassador Theatre Group, Gavin Kalin Productions, and Wessex Grove.
