Theatre for a New Audience will no longer stage the Sam Gold-directed Hamlet in Brooklyn next summer, according to the New York Times. The production, which was announced in April, was set to star Star Wars actor Oscar Isaac in the title role. Artistic differences that arose from Gold’s proposed adaptation of the text were reportedly the source of the departure.
As reported in the Times, the Public Theater is now in early discussions to stage the play downtown. While a co-production between both theatres was reportedly being discussed between TFNA founding artistic director Jeffrey Horowitz and The Public's Oskar Eustis, Hamlet will now no longer play at TFNA. Horowitz told the Times that he was disappointed by the final outcome; the show has been removed from the theatre’s site and a replacement production has yet to be announced.
The Public, TFNA and representatives for Gold declined to comment on the matter.

Hamlet was scheduled to play June 4-July 30, 2017, at the Polonsky Shakespeare Center in Brooklyn, marking Gold’s first collaboration with the theatre. In an earlier statement, Horowitz had said of the production: “Sam [Gold] is renowned for the transparent subtlety and nuance of the theatrical worlds he creates. Together Oscar Isaac and Sam Gold will explore the undiscovered country of Hamlet's world which begins, of course, with the first words of the play, ‘Who’s there?’”
Tony winner Gold (Fun Home) will return Off-Broadway this fall with another Shakespeare classic, Othello, at New York Theatre Workshop. The staging is set to star David Oyelowo and Daniel Craig.
