This spring, a number of shows have been having their opening night celebration on a different evening from their official opening night. Mary Jane, the new Broadway play starring Rachel McAdams, was one of those shows. The Amy Herzog play, now running at Samuel J. Friedman Theatre via Manhattan Theatre Club, had a gala celebration April 21. It will have its official opening night April 23. The run will continue through June 2 with Anne Kauffman at the helm.
McAdams stars in the title role, sharing the stage with Brenda Wehle as Ruthie and Tenkei, April Matthis as Sherry and Dr. Toros, Susan Pourfar as Brianne and Chaya, and Lily Santiago as Amelia and Kat. Katya Campbell, Susanna Guzmán, and Megumi Nakamura round out the company as understudies.

The play follows a single mother raising an ill child, and the female support system that surrounds her. The work premiered at Yale Repertory Theatre in 2017, coming to Off-Broadway's New York Theatre Workshop later the same year. Both of those earlier runs were also directed by Kauffman, and Wehle and Pourfar are reprising their performances from the Off-Broadway bow as well.
