Houston's Theatre Under the Stars has been chosen by Disney to create one of the first non-replica regional productions of the 2018 Broadway musical Frozen.
Directed and choreographed by TUTS Artistic Director Dan Knechtges (Lysistrata Jones), the new staging will be presented December 10–29. Casting and additional creative team members will be announced at a later date.
Based on the 2013 animated Disney film, Frozen features music and lyrics by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez and a book by Jennifer Lee.
The musical opened on Broadway in March 2018, earning Tony Award nominations for Best Musical, Best Book, and Best Original Score. The Broadway production announced in May 2020 that it would not reopen post-pandemic. The hit London production continues at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane and will play its final performance in September. The North American tour of Frozen, which opened in 2019, is still running.
Frozen will be part of TUTS' 2024-2025 season, which also includes Benj Pasek, Justin Paul, and Steven Levenson's Tony-winning Dear Evan Hansen (September 10–22), Alan Menken and Howard Ashman's cult classic Little Shop of Horrors (October 22–November 3), Knechtges and Megan Larche Dominick's The Ugly X-mas Sweater Musical (November 29–December 24), Jeff Richmond, Nell Benjamin, and Tina Fey's Mean Girls musical (January 28–February 9, 2025), Sara Bareilles and Jessie Nelson's Waitress musical (April 15–27), and Lin-Manuel Miranda and Quara Alegría Hudes' Tony-winning In the Heights (May 20–June 1).
