We Are!, an original musical by the creators and producers of Mama, I Want To Sing!, is having an industry workshop performance June 4 at 4:30 PM at the Dempsey Theater, 127 West 127th Street in Harlem. The workshop is not open to the public.

According to production notes, the show “dramatizes the stories, the secrets and the songs of today's generation of urban youth born around the turn of the [21st] century.” Based on the two-time Emmy Award-winning 60 Minutes double-segment feature, We Are! stars Vy Higginsen and the graduates of the Gospel For Teens program in Harlem.

Higginsen wrote the script with her husband and Mama, I Want To Sing! co-author, Ken Wydro, after hearing the personal stories and testimonies of the participants in the Gospel For Teens program. They describe We Are! as being “like A Chorus Line for singers and features a stirring blend of original music, and beloved pop and gospel favorites.”

“This first generation of youth in the 21st century faces a rapidly changing culture and new challenges,” Higginsen said. ”We hope it inspires audiences to view and consider this segment of American society with greater compassion and appreciation.”

We Are! is directed by Wydro, with choreography by Elijah Ahmad Lewis, who will play Stevie Wonder in the upcoming return of the Broadway musical Motown.

The 1983 musical Mama, I Want To Sing!, based on the life of Higginsen's sister, Doris Troy, ran more than 2,500 performances in New York, and has gotten two sequels and a 2011 movie adaptation.
