Singer-songwriter Mitski, playwright Eboni Booth, and Obie Award-winning director Whitney White have joined the creative team of the Broadway-aimed musical adaption of Walter Tevis’ The Queen's Gambit. The novel was adapted in 2020 into a hit Netflix series starring Anya-Taylor Joy. We first learned about the project in 2021.
Mitski will write the music and lyrics, while Booth will pen the book. Whitney White will be at the helm of the production, which is being produced by Tony Award-winning mini-studio Level Forward (POTUS, How to Dance in Ohio), Adrienne Warren (Tina), Lawryn LaCroix (POTUS, Mike Birbiglia: The Old Man & The Pool), and Mara Isaacs (Hadestown).
“Before Level Forward even brought the idea of making a musical of The Queen’s Gambit, I was a fan of the Netflix show, and an even greater fan of the original novel. So I was already determined to be a member of this team...And then I met Eboni and Whitney, and my determination grew tenfold!" said Mitski in a statement.
Set in the Cold War era, the story follows oprhaned chess prodigy Beth Harmon, who is determined to rise up the ranks of the chess world, but the higher she climbs, the further she falls in her struggle with addiction.
Details about the musical's world premiere will be announced at a later date. Visit TheQueensGambitMusical.com.
