Grammy Award nominee Michael Feinstein and his husband Terrence Flannery were among those who pledged a $1 million gift to The Great American Songbook Foundation, which wrapped up its 10th annual Songbook Academy summer intensive July 30.

Feinstein founded the non-profit in 2007 in an effort to preserve the legacy of American popular music and to educate future generations on its culturally diverse history. Laura Osnes, Michael McElroy, Melissa Manchester, Syvlia McNair, and Feinstein served as mentors for the 2019 Songbook Academy summer intensive, which invites 40 high school vocalists from around the country to attend a week of workshops and masterclasses.

Located in Carmel, Indiana, the Great American Songbook Foundation’s archives house over 40,000 pieces of sheet music, as well as historically significant audio and video recordings, correspondence, and memorabilia—ranging from early drafts of Meredith Willson’s The Music Man, to the original lyrics to “Unchained Melody.”

Feinstein and Flannery were joined in their pledge by Desperate Housewives producer Marc Cherry and foundation board members Paul and Sue Lowden.

The organization also oversees the Songbook Hall of Fame, which will induct Duke Ellington, Rosemary Clooney, Tony Bennett, and Paul Williams in September.
