The Broadway producing team for Rob Madge's solo show My Son's a Queer (But What Can You Do?) just got bigger.
The show, which will play a 16-week run on Broadway at the Lyceum Theatre, has welcomed Meena Harris and Phenomenal Media, JJ Maley, and George Strus onto the producing team. Additionally, Maley and Strus' non-profit organizations, Queer Arts Coalition and Breaking the Binary Theatre, will be leading the production's training and community engagement efforts.
With previews beginning February 27 and opening night set for March 12, the autobiographical solo show centers on Madge (Oliver!, Les Misérables) at age 12 as they attempt to create a full scale Disney parade in their house for their grandmother.

“Meena Harris's commitment to social justice and her track record of amplifying underrepresented voices aligns perfectly with the ethos of our production,” said producers Tom Smedes and Heather Shields in a statement. “Phenomenal Media’s passion for storytelling that drives change is exactly what My Son's a Queer embodies. This collaboration marks a significant step in bringing this poignant and necessary story to a broader audience, and we couldn't be more excited about the energy they bring to our team.
“In addition, we are thrilled to have JJ Maley and George Strus joining as co-producers. With a story that is so grounded in the experience of the queer community, it’s integral to have partners who are advocates and experts that will help to bring this important story to the Broadway stage. Their individual experiences supporting representation in theatre will be invaluable to the team.”
Directed by Luke Sheppard (& Juliet), the work premiered at London's Turbine Theatre in 2021 before becoming a sell-out at the 2022 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. West End bows followed in 2022 and 2023, earning a 2023 Olivier nomination. A cast recording was released in 2022. The play is one of several Edinburgh Fringe favorites to have crossed the pond in recent years, including the Tony-winning SIX, The Shark is Broken, and Alex Edelman's one-man show Just For Us.
My Son's a Queer features songs by Pippa Cleary (The Great British Bake Off Musical), scenic and costume design by Ryan Dawson Laight, lighting design by Jai Morjaria, sound design by Tingying Dong, video design by George Reeve, and orchestrations by Simon Nathan. The Broadway production will be produced by arrangement with Bill Kenwright and Paul Taylor Mills.
