Inspired by the 11-book series penned by Armistead Maupin, Netflix's Tales of the City follows previous series Tales of the City, More Tales of the City, and Further Tales of the City, which aired in the U.S. on PBS and Showtime. The revival series picks up as Mary Ann (Linney) returns home to Barbary Lane in San Francisco, where she's reunited with her daughter (Page) and ex-husband Brian (Gross) two decades after leaving them to pursue her career.

"Fleeing the midlife crisis that her picture perfect Connecticut life created, Mary Ann returns home to her chosen family and will quickly be drawn back into the orbit of Anna Madrigal (Dukakis) and the residents of 28 Barbary Lane."

Lauren Morelli, the series' showrunner, has assembled a wholly queer writing staff, made up of Andy Parker, Patricia Resnick (9 to 5 on Broadway), Marcus Gardley (Black Odyssey), Jen Silverman (The Roommate), Hansol Jung (Wild Goose Dreams), and Thomas Page McBee.

Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City is produced by Working Title Television and NBCUniversal International for Netflix, with Maupin, Linney, Morelli, and Alan Poul serving as executive producers. Additional executive producers include Working Title's Andrew Stearn, Liza Chasin, Tim Bevan, and Eric Fellner, with Michael Cunningham (The Hours) serving as consulting producer.
