Late tap legend Maurice Hines is honored with a concert presentation of his autobiographical show Tappin' Thru Life at Birdland Jazz July 29.
The performance features members of the 2013 show's original cast, including John and Leo Manzari and The DIVA Jazz orchestra, along with special guests Clint Holmes and Ann Hampton Callaway.
Tappin' Thru Life was workshopped at the Majestic Theatre in Boston in 2013 before making its official world premiere at Arena Stage in Washington, D.C. the same year. Later performances were given at Atlanta's Alliance Theatre, Los Angeles' Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, Cleveland Play House, Delaware Theatre Company, Penn's Landing Playhouse, and Off-Broadway's New World Stages.
Hines, who appeared on Broadway in The Girl in Pink Tights, Eubie!, Bring Back Birdie, Sophisticated Ladies, and Uptown... It's Hot!, died last year at the age of 80. Read Playbill's full obituary here.
“His single flame has lit a thousand candles that will continue to shine fiercely with his tradition, with people that will preserve it with dignity, and by doing so, will go forth living their lives in his honor,” said John Manzari in an earlier statement.
