In collaboration with TDF’s Autism Theatre Initiative, Matilda will invite theatregoing families to attend a special 1:30 PM autism-friendly matinee on Feb. 1 at the Shubert Theatre.

Other Broadway productions have also tailored special performances to be autism-friendly, including The Lion King and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.

"For autism-friendly performances, TDF purchases every seat in the theatre for sale at discount prices to families whose members include individuals on the autism spectrum," TDF states. "In order to be 'autism-friendly,' the shows are performed in a supportive environment for an audience including children or adults with autism or other sensory-sensitive issues. Slight adjustments to the productions include reductions in sound levels, and eliminating any strobe lights focused into the audience. In the theatre lobby, there are designated quiet and activity areas staffed with trained autism professionals if anyone needs to take a break from the performance."

Tickets for this performance are priced from $42-$77 and a limited number are available at tdf.org/autism.

Based on Dahl's children's book about a precocious bookworm with magical powers, Matilda premiered at the Royal Shakespeare Company's Courtyard Theatre in November 2010 and later transferred to the West End's Cambridge Theatre, where it continues to run. The Royal Shakespeare Company and The Dodgers present the Broadway run, which began Broadway previews March 4, 2013. Read reviews for Matilda here.

Tony Award-winning director Matthew Warchus (God of Carnage, The Norman Conquests, Boeing-Boeing, La Bête, Ghost) staged the inventive, kid-packed musical that has a book by Dennis Kelly and a score by Tim Minchin.

Matilda received four Tony Awards, including Best Book of a Musical, Best Featured Actor (Gabriel Ebert), Best Lighting Design and Best Scenic Design.

According to producers, Matilda "is the story of an extraordinary little girl who decides that despite a bad beginning filled with rotten parents, a terrifying school and a vicious head mistress, her story is going to be an astonishing one. With the help of her teacher, her friends and a little bit of imagination, Matilda proves that even if you're little, you can do big things."
