Three-time Tony winner Mark Rylance (Boeing-Boeing, Jerusalem, Twelfth Night) and Tony nominee J. Smith-Cameron (Our Country's Good, Succession) will star in a West End revival of Seán O’Casey's Juno and the Paycock this fall.
Directed by Tony and Olivier winner Matthew Warchus (God of Carnage, Matilda the Musical), previews will begin September 21 prior to an official opening October 3 at the Gielgud Theatre. Performances are currently scheduled through November 23.
The production, which casts Rylance as "Captain" Jack Boyle opposite Smith-Cameron's Juno Boyle, reunites producer Sonia Friedman, director Warchus, and Rylance following Boeing-Boeing and La Bête. Additional casting will be announced.
Set in 1922 Dublin as the Irish Civil War is tearing the nation apart, Juno and the Paycock follows Juno Boyle—a beleaguered matriarch struggling to make ends meet and keep the family together—and her husband, "Captain" Jack Boyle, who fancies himself a ship's commander but sails no further than the pub. When providence comes knocking with life-changing news, could the family’s troubles finally fade away?
Warchus said in a statement, “I have long been in love with this staggeringly great melodrama—a play which collides an Irish working-class domestic tragedy with some of the comedic bravura of the 1920s Music Hall in an unforgettable indictment of the chaos of civil war. I’m very excited to be embarking on my seventh collaboration with Mark Rylance, and my first with the brilliant American actress J. Smith-Cameron, on the 100-year anniversary production of this internationally acclaimed, strikingly relevant, Irish classic.”
The upcoming production will also have set and costume design by Rob Howell, lighting design by Hugh Vanstone, music by composer Claire van Kampen, and casting by Serena Hill.
