Ustinov Studio and Theatre Royal Bath's production of Sophie Treadwell's Machinal will make its London premiere via The Old Vic, with performances running April 11-June 1. Opening night is April 18.
Rosie Sheehy will again star, with Richard Jones directing.
The work, which recently entered the public domain in the U.S., is based on the true story of Ruth Snyder, who was sentenced to death for murder in 1928. The play explores the sexist system that can drive women to horrible acts.
Sheehy will share the stage with the production's entire original cast, including Daniel Abelson, Sam Alexander, Steven Beard, Daniel Bowerbank, Imogen Daines, Buffy Davis, Tim Frances, Carla Harrison-Hodge, Emilio Iannucci, Pierro Niel-Mee, and Wendy Nottingham. Further casting, by Ginny Schiller, is to be announced.
"Once in a while a production or lead performance comes along which makes theatre history. Such is the case with Rosie Sheehy’s gobsmacking performance in Richard Jones’ unmissable production of Sophie Treadwell’s expressionist tour de force, Machinal," says Old Vic Artistic Director Matthew Warchus in a statement. "I was one of the few lucky enough to catch this show at Theatre Royal Bath and to say I was completely blown away is an understatement."
The production features sets by Hyemi Shin, movement by Sarah Fahie, costumes by Nicky Gillibrand, lighting by Adam Silverman, and sound by Benjamin Grant.
