Off-Broadway News L Morgan Lee and Breaking the Binary Theatre Partner for Summer Intensive

The new organization is offering free sessions to a group of six trans, nonbinary, and Two-Spirit+ musical theatre performers.

L Morgan Lee

Breaking the Binary (BTB) Theatre, has partnered with its Core Community Advisory Board member and Tony nominee L Morgan Lee (A Strange Loop) for the recently created organization's inaugural BTB Summer Intensive program. Free sessions will be held in New York City July 31, August 7, and August 14.

Across the three sessions, a group of six trans, nonbinary, and Two-Spirit+ musical theatre performers will work with Lee on building confidence for auditions, networking within the industry, and further developing their craft. The sessions will include working through material with Lee; discussing how to navigate the industry as a TNB2S+ artist with Lee and a TNB2S+ industry professional; and working through audition materials with Lee, BTB Founding Artistic Director George Strus, a TNB2S+ industry professional, and three cis-industry professionals.

As BTB works to center safety for TNB2S+ performers in every process, all participants will be reimbursed for car transportation within the New York area following each session.

The program has an open submissions policy with Lee and Strus selecting six participants. Lee and Strus are looking for capabilities in storytelling, authenticity of self and artistry, and passion, with openness to all levels of skill and artistry. Performers must submit their applications by 11:59 PM ET June 18 for consideration. All applicants will be given an update on their status by 11:59 PM ET July 2.

BTB defines a "TNB2S+ artist as any artist who does not correspond with the male and female binary and is transgender, non-binary, Two-Spirit, gender non-conforming, genderqueer, agender, gender expansive, bigender, gender fluid, or otherwise lives outside of the cisnormative gender binary."
