Ogunquit Playhouse's upcoming world premiere musical My Best Friend's Wedding now has a director: Tony winner Kathleen Marshall! Performances run September 26–October 27 at the Maine Theatre.

Adapted from the 1997 film written by Ron Bass, the musical follows food critic Julianne Potter as she attempts to rekindle a relationship with an old flame...at his wedding. The Julia Roberts-led screen version famously included a group performance of Burt Bacharach and Hal David's "I Say a Little Prayer" (led by Rupert Everett). This stage version will also include the pair's "I'll Never Fall in Love Again" (originally written for Broadway's Promises, Promises), "I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself," "Walk On By," "What's New Pussycat?," and more songs from the Bacharach-David song catalogue. The musical's book is co-written by Bass and Jonathan Harvey.

The musical was previously set to premiere in 2020 with an Ireland and U.K. tour. That plan was initially postponed and later cancelled due to the pandemic.

Marshall is a nine-time Tony nominated director and choreographer, with wins for her dance work on 2004's Wonderful Town, 2006's The Pajama Game, and 2011's Anything Goes. As a director, she's helmed Broadway productions of Wonderful Town, The Pajama Game, Grease, Anything Goes, Nice Work If You Can Get It, Living On Love, and In Transit.

Ogunquit's season opened with Jessie Nelson and Sara Bareilles' Waitress. The theatre is currently hosting a new production of Ken Ludwig's Gershwin jukebox musical Crazy for You trough July 13, which will be followed by Hugh Wheeler and Stephen Sondheim's A Little Night Music July 18-August 17, and Howard Ashman and Alan Menken's Little Shop of Horrors August 22-September 21.
