Tony-winning Lion King director Julie Taymor, whose last Broadway outing was the much-in-the-news Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark, is reportedly working on a project about The Beatles.

The New York Post reports that Taymor was approached by Marty Bandier (Sony/ATV) to develop an original musical that utilizes the Beatles' vast catalog. Sources told the New York daily that the production will not be based on Taymor's Across the Universe, the 2007 film that concerned a romance between a young American woman and a Liverpudlian artist set against the backdrop of the Vietnam War and the music of the Beatles.

No other details about the project have been reported.

Beatlemania, which opened on Broadway in May 1977, was a financial hit, running more than 1,000 performances. The more recent Rain: A Tribute to the Beatles on Broadway, which also used the Beatles catalog, was less successful, playing only 300 performances in 2010-11.
