Manhattan Theatre Club is bringing Joshua Harmon's Prayer for the French Republic to Broadway, with performances slated to begin December 19 at the Friedman Theatre ahead of an opening night January 9, 2024. The Main Stem debut follow's MTC's Off-Broadway world premiere of the work, which played New York City Center Stage I last year. Tony winner David Cromer will return to direct after staging the premiere.

The play begins in 1944 with a Jewish couple awaiting news of their missing family, and follows five generations of a French Jewish family in its examination of history, home, and the effects of an ancient hatred. The Off-Broadway run won 2022 Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for Best Off-Broadway Play.

"Joshua Harmon tells a powerful story about facing adversity with grit, humor, and courage," says MTC Artistic Director Lynne Meadow. "I’m so proud that MTC is producing the Broadway premiere of this moving, brilliant, and timely play."

Casting and additional creative team for the Broadway bow will be announced.

The production joins an MTC season previously announced to include the world premiere of Jocelyn Bioh's Jaja's African Hair Braiding on Broadway, directed by Whitney White; and the world premieres of Qui Nguyen's Poor Yella Rednecks and John Patrick Shanley's Brooklyn Laundry Off-Broadway.
