Feb. 2:The New Group's revival of Sam Shepard’s Buried Child begins Off-Broadway featuring "Mad Men" star Rich Sommer, "Apollo 13"'s Ed Harris and Broadway vet Larry Pine. The play launched the iconic playwright to international fame following its critically acclaimed debut in 1978.
Feb. 5: David Harrower's award-winning Blackbird makes its Broadway debut with a cast headed by Jeff Daniels and Michelle Williams. The Joe Mantello-helmed play tells the story of Una and Ray, reunited after 15 years.
OPENING
Jan. 28: Dream of Red Pavilions, the epic 18th century Chinese novel about the rise and fall of an aristocratic family, receives its world-premiere stage adaptation at Off-Broadway's Pan Asian Repertory Theatre. The classic romance tells the story of two beings from the heavenly kingdom – a stone and a flower – who are reborn on earth as cousins and fall in love. LAST CHANCE
Jan. 31: Oscar winner Al Pacino and Christopher Denham take their final bows in David Mamet's two-hander, China Doll. Pacino plays a billionaire on the verge of retirement, ready to buy his young, new fiancée a jet plane and settle into the good life.
Jan. 31: The Olivier Award-winning King Charles III concludes its Broadway run. The critically acclaimed play imagines a future in which Britain's current Queen Elizabeth II has passed away and her son has assumed the throne.
SPECIAL EVENTS
Jan. 29: PBS airs "American Masters: Mike Nichols,"Elaine May's loving tribute to the late director and his extraordinary life. The film draws on long, candid interviews with the artist in which he talks about his humble beginnings as a German refugee.
Feb. 3:"Josh Groban: Stages Live" is released in cinemas nationwide. Recorded before a live audience at the Los Angeles Theatre, Groban brings iconic songs from musical theatre to life, including "All I Ask of You" (The Phantom of the Opera) and "Anthem" (Chess), among many others.
Next year, Carnegie Hall's house band will perform Bernstein’s “Kaddish” Symphony, unfinished works by Schubert, and the final concert of Conductor Bernard Labadie.
