Tony Awards Girl From the North Country Celebrates Tony Nominations With Video Charting Its Journey to Broadway

The Conor McPherson-Bob Dylan musical was recently nominated for seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

Conor McPherson and Bob Dylan's Girl From the North Country, which reopened at Broadway's Belasco Theatre April 29 for 50 performances through June 11, celebrates its recent seven Tony nominations with a new video charting the musical's journey to Broadway.

Narrated by Robert Joy, the video details the challenges the acclaimed musical has faced throughout the past three-and-a-half years as a group of artists hoped to "share a hopeful tale about a group of wayward souls just trying to make their way in America." The video above also features commentary by McPherson and several co-stars.

Girl From the North Country received seven Tony nominations May 9, including Best New Musical, Best Book of a Musical (McPherson), Best Orchestrations (Simon Hale), Best Sound Design of a Musical (Simon Baker), Best Direction of a Musical (McPherson), Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical (Mare Winningham), and Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical (Jeannette Bayardelle).

The current Broadway cast includes Todd Almond, Colin Bates, Tony nominee Jeannette Bayardelle, Craig Bierko, Jennifer Blood, Matthew Frederick Harris, Caitlin Houlahan, Robert Joy, Luba Mason, Ben Mayne, Matt McGrath, Tom Nelis, Jay O. Sanders, John Schiappa, Austin Scott, Housso Semon, Kimber Elayne Sprawl, Rachel Stern, Ben Toomer, Chiara Trentalange, Bob Walton, Aidan Wharton, Chelsea Lee Williams, and Tony and Oscar nominee and two-time Emmy winner Mare Winningham.

Girl From the North Country originally opened March 5, 2020, but closed just a week later due to New York’s COVID restrictions. The production reopened October 13, 2021, subsequently temporarily closing January 23, 2022.

Featuring a book by director McPherson and music from Dylan's catalog, the musical offers a slice-of-life look at a small community in Duluth, Minnesota, where the Laine family operates a rundown guesthouse.
