The company of the Susan Stroman-staged show kicked off their sitzprobe by singing "Happy Birthday" to composer John Kander, who turns 96 March 18.

Rehearsals are underway for Broadway's upcoming New York, New York, beginning performances at the St. James Theatre March 24 ahead of an April 26 opening night. As previously announced, the new musical, inspired by the 1977 film of the same name and featuring a score by John Kander, the late Fred Ebb, and Lin-Manuel Miranda, will be led by Colton Ryan and Anna Uzele.

The company recently gathered for their sitzprobe, the first sing-through of the entire show with the full orchestra. The cast kicked things off with a rousing rendition of "Happy Birthday" for composer John Kander, turning 96 March 18. Watch the special moment above.

Inspired by the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Motion Picture New York, New York, written by Earl M. Rauch and Mardik Martin, the new musical is set in 1946. The war is over, and a collection of artists has dreams as big and diverse as the city itself. Among them is Francine Evans (Uzele), a young singer just off the bus from Philly, who is destined for greatness. At least, until she encounters New York native Jimmy Doyle (Ryan), a brilliant but disillusioned musician.

Joining Ryan and Uzele are Clyde Alves (On the Town) as Tommy Caggiano, John Clay III (Choir Boy) as Jesse Webb, Janet Dacal (In the Heights) as Sofia Diaz, Ben Davis (Dear Evan Hansen) as Gordon Kendrick, Oliver Prose as Alex Mann, Angel Sigala as Mateo Diaz, and Tony Award nominee Emily Skinner (Side Show) as Madame Veltri. Prose and Sigala both make their Broadway debuts with the production.
