From Gypsy Pups to Once on This Island Goats: Broadway's Most Memorable Animal Co-stars | Playbill

Special Features From Gypsy Pups to Once on This Island Goats: Broadway's Most Memorable Animal Co-stars

Two Broadway shows this fall feature dogs, which means it's time to look back on the many fur babies that have graced the stage.

Yesterday, the Gypsy revival announced that the role of Rose's dog Chowsie will be played by a real canine, a rescue pup named Tana June who once played Toto in a community theatre production of Wizard of Oz. Another small dog named Indy will serve as the Chowsie understudy because it's important for animals to have a night off.

But they're not the only dogs prancing across a Broadway stage this fall. A few blocks away at Left on Tenth, two ultra-furry friends named Honey and Charlie will star alongside Julianna Margulies and Peter Gallagher. Plus, Annie, another show that features a very important pup, will soon come back to New York.

With that many very good dogs on a stage right now, we are looking back on the many four-legged (or winged) actors who have starred on Broadway in the gallery below. From Sparky and Peapod (the goats of Once on This Island), to Perry the goose in The Ferryman, to the many dogs who have graced the stage, these animal artists made an unforgettable impression on audiences, even if their stage time was relatively brief (some even inspired their own Instagram accounts). And many of these animals are the fur children of longtime animal trainer William Berloni, of Berloni Theatrical Animals.

P.S. Although we could not source photos for Toby the rat in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time or the serenaded turtles in Rocky the Musical, we do feel the need to mention them here because they're so rare on Broadway.
