Video Francesca Carpanini and Uly Schlesinger Talk About Their "Indefensible Characters" in This Beautiful Future

The love story between two teenagers, a girl in occupied France and a Nazi soldier, currently runs Off-Broadway at Cherry Lane Theater.

Stars of Rita Kalnejais' This Beautiful Future Francesca Carpanini (All My Sons) and Uly Schlesinger (HBO Max's Genera+ion) sat down with Playbill to talk about the Off-Broadway show currently running at Cherry Lane Theater through October 30.

This Beautiful Future is set in the middle of World War II as two teenagers take shelter from a divided world. Elodie is French and 17. Otto, a German soldier, is 16. Safe from the debris outside, they meet secretly for one night, fall in love, and fall through time.

The two talked about their characters, the questions the play provokes its audience to consider—like "who deserves empathy"—and what they hope people will talk about over dinner after seeing the show.
