Martin Crimp’s When We Have Sufficiently Tortured Each Other, starring Oscar winner and Tony nominee Cate Blanchett, opened on January 23 at London’s National Theatre. The production also stars Stephen Dillane (The Real Thing, Game of Thrones) and is directed by Katie Mitchell.
The play revamps Samuel Richardson’s novel Pamela to tell the story of a teenage servant who refuses her master’s advances. Playwright Martin Crimp uses the novel as inspiration for a play about five characters entering a risky game of sexual domination and resistance.

The production features set design by Vicki Mortimer, lighting design by James Farncombe, sound design by Melania Wilson, costume design by Sussie Juhlin-Wallén, and movement direction by Joseph Alford.
The play comes on the heels of a broader cultural conversation about Dahl's work and the prejudice that was embedded in many of his most beloved stories.
