Off-Broadway's Irish Repertory Theatre has announced additional productions for its 2024 season, as well as the first production of its 2025 lineup.
Beginning September 11, stage and screen star Kate Mulgrew (Orange Is the New Black, Equus, Ryan's Hope, Star Trek: Voyager, Tea at Five), as previously reported, will be seen in Nancy Harris' The Beacon. Directed by Marc Atkinson Borrull, the official opening is September 22 for a limited engagement through November 3 on Irish Rep’s Francis J. Greenburger Mainstage.
Following The Beacon will be the long-awaited return of The Dead, 1904–an immersive adaptation of James Joyce's classic, adapted by Pulitzer-winning Irish poet Paul Muldoon and novelist Jean Hanff Korelitz. Produced alongside Dot Dot Productions in association with The American Irish Historical Society, the piece will be directed by Ciarán O’Reilly and begin previews November 20 at The American Irish Historical Society, with an opening night set for November 26, for a limited run through January 5, 2025.
The fall season will conclude with the return of A Child’s Christmas in Wales by Dylan Thomas, adapted and directed by Charlotte Moore, with music direction by David Hancock Turner and playing December 4-29; as well as special events including the documentary screening Two Roads and the New Works Fall Festival, spotlighting Northern Irish voices.
In January 2025, Irish Rep will present Beckett Briefs by Samuel Beckett, directed by Ciarán O’Reilly and starring Academy Award winner F. Murray Abraham (Amadeus). The play will be the first program for the company's 2025 season.
The play, written by one of Ireland's most legendary playwrights, is actually three in one, stitching together three short plays that run the gamut of existence from birth to the afterlife, presented on a single bill.
The first, Not I, is the story of a non-verbal woman, abandoned by her parents at birth, who, after living an uneventful life until the age of 70, suddenly hears voices and realizes it’s herself speaking. The second, Krapp’s Last Tape, follows an aged man as he reviews his life with the assistance of his younger self heard on autobiographical tapes recorded in his earlier years. The third and final, Play, sketches out the eternal afterlife of a man, his wife, and his mistress as they relay the sordid details of their love triangle from their urns as they rest side by side.
Full casting, creative team, and ticket information will be announced at a later date.
