Ella Beatty (Feud: Capote vs. The Swans) is set to make her Broadway debut as River in Branden Jacobs-Jenkins' Appropriate. Beatty will assume the role when the production moves to the Belasco Theatre as previously reported, replacing original cast member Elle Fanning, who is unable to transfer with the show.
Previously slated to close March 3 at the Hayes Theater, Appropriate will now play a 13-week engagement at the Belasco, with performances beginning March 25. The strictly limited run will continue through June 23.
The transfer will give the Second Stage Theater production a commercial run on the Main Stem, with Ambassador Theatre Group, Amanda Dubois, Annapurna Theatre, Bad Robot Live, Kristin Caskey, Mike Isaacson, and Bee Carrozzini stepping in to produce in association with Second Stage.
Almost the entire cast is continuing with the transfer, including Sarah Paulson, Corey Stoll, Michael Esper, Natalie Gold, Graham Campbell, Alyssa Emily Marvin, Lincoln Cohen, and Everett Sobers.
Appropriate opened December 18 at the Hayes Theater after beginning performances November 29. The production marks Jacobs-Jenkins' Broadway playwriting debut, following a credit in 2022 for contributing additional material to Lincoln Center Theater's revival of Thornton Wilder's The Skin of Our Teeth. Lila Neugebauer is directing. Read the reviews here.
The work centers on a white family who, while closing out the estate of their late father, discover some disturbing artifacts that force them to confront their family's past. The play was previously produced in 2014 Off-Broadway at Signature Theatre.
