Marathon Dancing
Tony winner Victoria Clark, last on Broadway in a Tony-nominated performance in the revival of Gigi, is currently directing the New York Musical Festival production of Newton’s Cradle, which will be presented August 3-7 at The Duke on 42nd Street. Last week, I asked the celebrated singing actress, who was also recently seen in the title role of the Toronto workshop of the new musical Sousatzka, to pen a list of her most memorable nights onstage. Her choices and commentary follow.

Marathon Dancing Off-Broadway
I played a mute clown, who was a trauma survivor, and I was pregnant with my son at the time. I had a pair of polyester checked pants that stretched as I got bigger and more pregnant, and I had some fairly athletic dance moves. I kept asking my doctor, “Are all these calisthenics okay for the baby?” My dance and scene partner was the amazing Gabe Barre.

How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying on Broadway
The first time my son ever saw me perform was from a box at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in How to Succeed... He saw me in a scene with Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker and immediately started calling to me in a very loud voice, “Hiiiiii Moooooommmmm! HI MOOOMMMMM!” After I exited, “Bye, Mom!”

Titanic on Broadway
During the holidays, I took my best friend and our two families to see the Radio City Christmas Spectacular before a Saturday matinee. The show ran longer than I expected, and I barely arrived to my matinee by half-hour. When it came time to sing the patter section listing the “First Class Passengers“ at the beginning of Act One, I found myself adding, “44 shepherd dogs...”
