Two-time Tony nominee Denis Jones has replaced Josh Rhodes as director and choreographer of Asolo Repertory Theatre's upcoming production of the Tony-winning musical Crazy for You, which will play the Sarasota, Florida, venue November 15, 2023-January 4, 2024.
Rhodes is departing the production to make his Broadway directing debut for the recently announced revival of Spamalot. Rhodes was Tony-nominated for his choreography for Rodgers + Hammerstein's Cinderella.
“We are thrilled that Josh Rhodes will be making his Broadway directing debut,” says Asolo Rep Producing Artistic Director Peter Rothstein. “He directed his first musical on our stage, beginning a long and impressive history with Asolo Rep, including blockbuster productions of Evita and The Sound of Music.”
Rothstein continues, “Denis Jones’ celebrated work as a director and choreographer on Broadway and across the globe make him a perfect choice to helm Crazy for You.”
Casting and additional creative team members for Crazy for You will be announced at a later date.
Jones received Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, and Chita Rivera nominations for his choreography for both Tootsie and Irving Berlin’s Holiday Inn and also choreographed the Broadway production of Honeymoon in Vegas.
Crazy for You, with music and lyrics by George Gershwin and Ira Gershwin and a book by two-time Tony Award nominee Ken Ludwig, is based on the 1930 musical Girl Crazy. The 1992 Broadway production was directed by Mike Ockrent with choreography by Susan Stroman.
The musical played Broadway's Shubert Theatre January 1992-January 1996. Harry Groener and Jodi Benson headed the original Broadway cast. The musical won three 1992 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. A West End revival, starring Charlie Stemp, currently plays London's Gillian Lynne Theatre.
