Awards Dave Harris, Marc Shaiman, More Win 2023 Dramatists Guild Awards

Harris' Horton Foote Award recognizes a dramatist producing work that explores what it means to be human.

The Dramatists Guild revealed more winners of their 2023 awards in a May 15 ceremony at Joe's Pub.

Among the new winners are Some Like It Hot composer Marc Shaiman, receiving the Frederick Loewe Award in recognition of his work on the Tony-nominated musical; Dave Harris, receiving the Horton Foote Award in recognition of his work exploring the nature of being human; and Nissy Aya and Candrice Jones, both receiving the Lanford Wilson Award for emerging playwrights.

Additionally, Brooklyn Public Library and Friends of George's received Defender Awards from the Dramatists Legal Defense Fund, honoring their championing of free speech in the face of book banning and the Tennessee anti-drag law.

They join previously announced winners Iakowi:he’ne’ Oakes, the Guild's inaugural Lucille Lortel Foundation Indigenous Theatermaker Award; Samuel D. Hunter and Sanaz Toossi, both Hull-Warriner Award recipients; Caridad Svich, recipient of the Flora Roberts Award; and Lifetime Achievement honorees satirist Jules Feiffer and, in a joint award, I'm Getting My Act Together and Taking It On the Road writers Gretchen Cryer and Nancy Ford.

Along with recognizing this year's Guild Award winners, the May 15 evening featured performances, including Kayla Pecchioni singing Some Like It Hot's "At the Old Majestic Nickel Matinee," Colton Ryan singing New York, New York's "A Quiet Thing," and Jillian Lewis singing I'm Getting My Act Together...'s "Natural High."
