Broadway News Broadway Marks Election Day 2022

Find out how some shows have worked to get out the vote, and which shows will be dark November 8.

As Election Day 2022 approaches, select Broadway shows will be dark November 8. Four shows which normally hold Tuesday evening performances that will not take the stage  this week are Into the Woods, Almost Famous, MJ, and SIXThe Phantom of the Opera will also be dark on Election Day, and every Tuesday following through December 13.

Hamilton and Beetlejuice have both actively participated in raising awareness about the upcoming election, partnering with organizations earlier this season to encourage voter registration and get out the vote for the midterm elections.

Beetlejuice partnered with voter registration organization HeadCount to bring one fan and a friend to New York City for a chance to see the spooky musical along with receiving merchandise, a chance to speak with the cast, and more. Fans entered the contest by checking their registration and registering to vote through the nonpartisan nonprofit's website. The contest is part of HeadCount's Good to Vote campaign which works to motivate younger voters to participate in the election process.

Meanwhile, Hamilton cast members took to the recording studio for a lyric rewrite of the musical's "The Election of 1800."  The new version, "The Election of 2022," was filmed and shared to raise awareness about the importance of voting rights and going to the ballot box in partnership with Michelle Obama's When We All Vote initiative. Individuals can learn about their polling place, what's on their ballot, voting rights, and more via the When We All Vote website. Audiences can visit the Ham4Progress website, which helps voters understand how to register and how to vote in their state. Lin-Manuel Miranda has also personally been participating in Get Out the Vote rallies across the states of Georgia, Texas, and Florida.

Additionally, Broadway's Charlotte d'Amboise and Dana Moore have come together to create a dance video raising awareness to get out the vote. Watch choreographers d'Amboise, Moore, Valerie Lussac, Whitney G-Bowley, Bryan Knowlton, Jorge Salas, and Yuriko Miyake joined by Joel Ceruto, Matthew Davies, Jason Denton, Darrell T. Joe, Natalie Leonard, Donovan Mendelovitz, Erin Moore, Matthew Napoli, Lindsay Poulis, and Shauna Sorenson dance to "Right Side of History" by singer-songwriter Eric Hutchinson.

Created in partnership with the Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan Center for Social Responsibility and GIG, the video was also produced and directed by G-Bowley. The creative team for the project includes videographer Devon Yesberger, editor Robbie Tann, lighting and sound designer Leeanne G-Bowley, and production photographer Manish Gosalia.
