Understudies, swings, and standbys have become increasingly vital at Hadestown this week, as they have been across Broadway since its return from the shutdown amidst continued struggles with COVID-19. Just this week, dance captain T. Oliver Reid filled in as one of the traditionally female–cast Fates, and Tony nominee Amber Gray made a surprise return to Persephone, the role Gray originated, March 11.

Hadestown features a book, music, and lyrics by Anaïs Mitchell. The Rachel Chavkin-directed production opened on Broadway April 17, 2019, going on to win eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre Album.
