The first post-Tony box-office data is in, and it looks like the June 16 ceremony sent audiences racing to see the winners for themselves. Grosses rose cumulatively only a little, just under 2%, bringing in a total of $37.6 million. But that's a better performance than the percentage change shows. Ben Platt Live at the Palace, Uncle Vanya, and Mother Play all played their final performances the weekend of the 2024 Tony Awards, meaning there were three less shows last week.
Among the Tony winners that got big boosts were Best Revival of a Musical Merrily We Roll Along and Best Play Stereophonic. The former has been regularly sitting at the top among the top-grossing shows, but last week the show broke the house record and landed in The $2 Million Club for only the second time in its entire run, the last being the famously lucrative Thanksgiving holiday week. Bringing in $2.17 million, the show saw the highest take of the entire run. Perhaps audiences were especially eager to be present for the live filming (still no word on when or if that capture will get a commercial release).
Stereophonic missed reaching the top five, but the David Adjmi play did see the strongest take of its run so far, joining The $1 Million Club for the first time. The production is in one of Broadway's smaller theatres—the Golden has a capacity of just 778. It was a pretty impressive week for the hit show, made possible by the average ticket price of $164—a total that beats the cumulative average by more than $30.
Merrily and Stereophonic were the biggest benefactors of 2024 Tony wins, but they weren't the only. Best Musical winner The Outsiders saw the highest gross of its run last week, too: $1.3 million; and An Enemy of the People, led by Best Leading Actor in a Play winner Jeremy Strong, played its final week on the boards with the highest gross of its run at $1.55 million—a record breaker for the Circle in the Square Theatre. Even Best Revival of a Play winner Appropriate brought in the second-highest gross of its run, and that's with the production's Tony-winning star, Sarah Paulson, out sick for four of the week's performances!
All in all, the Tonys (and the arrival of summer) seem to have sent audiences to Broadway. More than 92% of seats were filled over the 32 currently running shows last week, with the average ticket price sitting at a more than healthy $132.86. Last week also saw the closures of An Enemy of the People, Patriots, and The Heart of Rock and Roll, which means we can probably expect a decrease in overall box-office take in this week's data, but that doesn't mean that the post-Tonys summer boom can't continue with the shows still performing.
