Industry News Broadway Grosses Analysis: Post-Holiday Drop Doesn't Stop Days of Wine and Roses From Selling Out 1st Previews

Things got back to normal in 2024 following a big holiday bump.

Broadway came back down to earth after a stratospheric holiday performance last week, with cumulative grosses dropping by more than 30% to $29.7 million from $45.4 million the week prior. But that's nothing to be upset about. Holidays are when Broadway is typically at its best, and many shows gave extra performances the week before last. This week's healthy grosses are much closer to business as usual.

And so it's no great surprise that the usual suspects are still at the top of the list. The Lion King retained its top spot with $2.44 million, followed by Wicked with $2.12 million, Sweeney Todd with $2.04 million, Hamilton with $2 million, and Merrily We Roll Along $1.79 million. Almost all of those played to standing-room-only crowds, ironically with only Lion King and Wicked under 100% capacity for the week (the Minskoff and Gershwin Theatres, respectively, are among the largest houses on the Main Stem, regularly allowing them to bring in the most cash while still having seats left to fill).

We're heading into what is typically the lowest period for Broadway ticket sales, though we aren't yet seeing the huge rash of show closings that we normally do around this time. We lost Some Like It Hot December 30, and Shucked plays its final show January 14, but we're still a far cry from the usual four or five shows all closing on the first Sunday after New Year's.

And, well over 15 of the 26 shows that played last week made The $1 Million Club, a strong showing for any time of year, much less the slow season. All but six shows played to houses at least 90% full, too.

Some of the board's newest shows are looking promising. Days of Wine and Roses, which played its first two performances last week, sold out Studio 54 entirely at an average ticket price of $81.95. Producers will be looking for that last data point to climb higher, but if that attendance can hold, things will be looking positive for the Adam Guettel-Craig Lucas musical. As for shows new this season that have already opened, Gutenberg!SpamalotBack to the Future, and Merrily We Roll Along all brought in receipts in excess of $1 million.

Take a look at the full report here.
