With the 76th Annual Tony Awards just days away (winners will be named June 11), industry insiders may be looking at how nominees fare at the box office for clues on how this year's awards will shake out. When it comes to the much venerated Best Musical category, & Juliet is establishing itself as one to watch, at least in terms of grosses. The show came in at 10th overall for every show currently running, but the jukebox musical has consistently been the best performing of the Best Musical nominees for three weeks—and nominations were only revealed four weeks ago. Back in the $1 Million Club this week, the show took in $1.12 million at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre box office and filled 96% of its seats. That performance could easily sway voters, many of whom manage touring houses around the country and may look to vote for the most profitable use of the Best Musical title in terms of marketing.

But the show is not without fierce competition. Fellow Best Musical nominees Some Like It Hot and New York, New York have both also performed well at the box office, though falling short of & Juliet's numbers. Both productions also have much to gain from potentially winning Best Musical, with the former being a splashy stage adaptation of a beloved film and the latter boasting one of the more stacked creative teams in recent memory, including John Kander, the late Fred Ebb, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Susan Stroman. And, of course, it doesn't get more beloved or widely known than New York, New York's stirring title number, the musical's finale.

Otherwise, Broadway stayed more or less steady compared to the week previous, with cumulative grosses rising by less than 1%. Best Revival of a Musical Tony nominee Sweeney Todd continues to be far and away the 2022-2023 season's best performing production, with its total of $1.88 million the third highest on the Main Stem last week. Topping the list were mainstays The Lion King, with $2.25 million; and Hamilton, with $1.89 million. Wicked and MJ The Musical rounded out the top five.
