Broadway grosses continue to climb as more and more productions open in the 2023–2024 season. For the week ending March 24, the 26 currently running productions brought in a total of $28,519,828, up 1.64% from the previous week. Attendance also increased, with 229,911 people taking in a Broadway show with an average admission of $124.05 (up $3.52).
It was a good week for newcomers and long runners alike. In fact, the Tony-winning revival of Chicago, Broadway’s current longest-running production, enjoyed its highest grossing non-holiday performance week in the show’s 27-year history. The John Kander-Fred Ebb-Bob Fosse musical took in $1,036,214, surpassing the previous record of $978,965 for the week ending March 10.
Meanwhile, three musicals currently in previews—The Outsiders, Lempicka, and The Who's Tommy—played to large crowds, filling 99.25%, 96.29%, and 93.02% of their respective theatres. The Tommy revival officially opens March 28 at the Nederlander, while The Outsiders will open at the Jacobs April 11 and Lempicka at the Longacre April 14. And, the new musical The Notebook grossed $895,030, up $127,749 over the prior week, and this was during a week that included four heavily comped performances.
The top five highest-grossing productions of the week were familiar titles with two shows bringing in more than $2 million each, The Lion King ($2,062,066) and Wicked ($2,043,444), followed by Hamilton ($1,951,748), Merrily We Roll Along ($1,613,573), and MJ the Musical ($1,509,767).
In all, half of the 26 shows earned $1 million or more at the box office, while 21 played to 90% capacity or more. While there are a large amount of new productions opening this spring, it seems Broadway audiences are welcoming them by showing up.
