Education News Bonnie Milligan to Host 2023-24 Roger Rees Awards

The awards celebrate high school student performances in New York, with two Outstanding Performer winners to go on to the Jimmy Awards in June.

Tony winner Bonnie Milligan is set to host the 2023-24 Roger Rees Awards for Excellence in Student Performance, which will be held May 19 at The Gerald W. Lynch Theatre at John Jay College.

The Roger Rees Awards, named for the late, Tony-winning actor, celebrate high school student performances in the Greater New York region. The two students who receive the Outstanding Performer award will go on to compete in the National High School Musical Theatre Awards (The Jimmy Awards) in June. 

Milligan is currently playing Debra in Broadway's Kimberly Akimbo, which plays its final performance April 28. She received the 2023 Tony for Best Featured Actress for her performance. Milligan is set to star as Alice Beane in the New York City Center Encores! revival of Titanic in June.

Co-sponsored by Disney Theatrical Group and Broadway's Back to the Future, this year's Roger Rees Awards will feature over 100 high school student performers, singers, and musicians representing 74 area schools. Students will be honored in performance categories, including Outstanding Performer, Outstanding Choral Performance, Outstanding Solo Performance, and Outstanding Student Reporter. New York City Center will also introduce an Outstanding Scenic and Costume Design Award and select a student orchestra to perform at the event.

The panel of judges for this year's Outstanding Performer Award includes Erich Bergen, Kiara Brown Clark, Jenny GerstenBaayork Lee, Merri Sugarman, and Tom Viertel
