EGOT winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul are set to write original music "in the vein of Barbie" for Apple's movie adaptation of the computer game The Oregon Trail, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Pasek and Paul will also serve as producers for the film.
Will Speck and Josh Gordon will direct and produce the adaptation, which is still in early development. The Lucas Bros. (Judas and the Black Messiah) and Max Reisman will write the screenplay.
Caroline Fraser will also produce for HarperCollins Productions, which owns the rights to the Oregon Trail franchise, along with Kevin K. Vafi. Pasek, Paul, Speck, and Gordon recently collaborated on the 2022 musical comedy film Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile. As previously reported, Pasadena Playhouse will soon give a stage adaptation a world premiere.
The Oregon Trail computer game series was originally developed in 1971, and rose to popularity in the 1980s. Within the game, players are assigned the role of a pioneer wagon leader, and tasked with guiding a group of settlers along the Oregon Trail as they face such challenges as crossing rivers, hunting, and those darned bouts of dysentery.
Pasek and Paul received widespread recognition as composers for 2017 Best Musical winner Dear Evan Hansen, for which the pair also received a Tony Award for Best Score and Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album. Musicals for which the duo contributed music and lyrics also include Edges, James and the Giant Peach, Dogfight, and A Christmas Story: The Musical.
For the screen, Pasek and Paul have contributed material for Smash, Only Murders in the Building, La La Land, The Greatest Showman, the Dear Evan Hansen film adaptation, and more. They achieved EGOT status in September when their song "Which of the Pickwick Triplets Did It?” from season three of Only Murders in the Building received an Emmy Award for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics. In addition to their aforementioned Tony and Grammy wins, the pair earned an Oscar in 2017 for "City of Stars" from La La Land.
