At age 22, Timothée Chalamet has earned himself the title of 2017’s Breakout Star. After small appearances in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar as Young Tom Cooper and The Adderall Diaries as teenage Stephen Elliot—among others—Chalamet now stars in two of the years most buzzed about films: Lady Bird and Call Me By Your Name. But Chalamet was making waves in the theatre world even earlier.

A graduate of Laguardia High School for the Performing Arts in New York City, Chalamet made his New York stage debut in 2011 in The Talls. In 2016, he starred Off-Broadway in John Patrick Shanley’s Prodigal Son, at Manhattan Theatre Club, as a younger version of Shanley at boarding school. The actor earned rave reviews and was named a finalist for the Clive Barnes Award in acting—which recognize young performers on the rise—for his performance. (Past recipients of the Clive Barnes Award have included Nina Arianda, Annaleigh Ashford, and Alex Sharp.) He was also nominated for a Drama League Award for Distinguished Performance and won the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Play.

While Chalamet turned heads as the brooding cool guy in Lady Bird opposite Saoirse Ronan, his Golden Globe nomination comes for his performance as Elio in Call Me By Your Name, opposite Armie Hammer. Based on the novel of the same name, Luca Guadignano’s film weaves together a coming-of-age story and a beautiful romance when Elio falls in love with Oliver, a university student who comes to stay with Elio’s family in Italy for a summer.

On January 7, Chalamet faces off against some of the most compelling actors of our time: Daniel Day-Lewis, Tom Hanks, Gary Oldman, and Denzel Washington. We’ll see if there is a changing of the guard come awards night.

Tune in to the 75th Annual Golden Globe Awards January 7 at 8PM ET on NBC.
