Two different casts perform in Atlantic Theater Company's world premiere of Shayan Lotfi's What Became of Us, which officially opens June 4 following previews that began May 17 Off-Broadway at Atlantic Stage 2.

Directed by Jennifer Chang, the opening cast is led by Joy Luck Club's Rosalind Chao and M. Butterfly Tony winner BD Wong (through June 15). The second cast will feature House of Saddam Emmy winner Shohreh Aghdashloo and The Band's Visit Tony winner Tony Shalhoub (June 10-29). For four performances June 11-13, both casts will perform back to back as a double-feature event.

What Became of Us follows two siblings, "one born there [and] one born here," according to press notes. The play examines how they maintain their connections to the old country, to this country, and to each other.

Playwright Lofti said in an earlier statement, “My intention for this piece has always been that the roles would alternate between separate pairings of actors from different diasporic backgrounds. I am thrilled that Atlantic has supported this by bringing together this remarkable cast.”

The production also features sets by Tanya Orellana, costumes by Rodrigo Muñoz, lighting by Reza Behjat, sound and compositions by Fan Zhang, and casting by Caparelliotis Casting's David Caparelliotis and Joe Geary. Alyssa K. Howard is the production stage manager.

Performances continue through June 29.

Lotfi is a 2023–2024 Tow Foundation Playwright-in-Residence.
