Bard at the Gate’s virtual production of Lloyd Suh’s Charles Francis Chan Jr.’s Exotic Oriental Murder Mystery will stream free of charge for 24 hours beginning January 26 at 7:30 PM ET.
Suh’s frequent collaborator, Ralph Peña, artistic director of Ma-Yi Theater, will direct the comedy about Asian-Americans in popular culture. The cast features Eric Sharp, Jeena Yi, Jeff Biehl, Karoline, Peter Kim, and Mia Katigbak.
A talkback with the playwright, director, and cast—joined by Bard creator Paula Vogel—is scheduled for January 27 at 7:30 PM ET. Virtual attendees will be able to ask questions of the panelists.
Set in Berkeley in 1967 against the backdrop of the War in Vietnam and the Civil Rights Movement, Charles Francis Chan concerns college dropout Frank Chan and his activist girlfriend Kathy Ching, who find themselves in a cultural time warp—from the ancestral railways to the legacy of Charlie Chan stereotypes—and a murder mystery.
The stylist for the production is Riw Rakkulchon with digital filming and editing by Virtual Design Collective and creative direction by Jared Mezzochi.
The second season of Bard at the Gate, which is produced in conjunction with the McCarter Theater Center in Princeton, New Jersey, will continue in March 2022 with Dipika Guha's Passing.
