Stage and screen star Anthony Ramos is reportedly planning a Broadway return in a revival of Peter Shaffer's Amadeus, according to an interview the Hamilton star did on podcast WTF With Marc Maron.
"I'm probably not supposed to talk about it," Ramos says around the 50:50 mark in the episode. "I signed on to do Amadeus on Broadway, to play Mozart. We're looking for Salieri now." Ramos is mum on other details, and Playbill was not able to confirm the upcoming production.
A revival would be the work's third Broadway outing, following a Tony-winning original production in 1980 and a 1999 revival, both directed by Peter Hall. The work, by Shaffer, centers on a fictional rivalry between the silly but profound Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the serious but ultimately musically insignificant Antonio Salieri, both composers and both real-world figures. Ian McKellen and Tim Curry starred in the original Broadway production, which followed a world premiere run at London's National in 1979, starring Paul Scofield and Simon Callow. The work got the big screen treatment with a Best Picture Academy Award-winning film in 1984, starring F. Murray Abraham as Salieri opposite now-producer Tom Hulce as Mozart. The National revived the play in 2016, though it is unclear if Ramos' production will be another transfer or an altogether new production.
Ramos made his Broadway debut in the original company of Hamilton, creating the roles of John Laurens and Philip Hamilton. He has since turned that success into screen stardom, playing Usnavi in the film adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda's In the Heights, Ramon in A Star is Born, and Noah in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, among many other credits.
