The nominations for the 2019 Drama League Awards were announced April 17, with current Waitress stars Shoshana Bean and Jeremy Jordan revealing the shows and artists recognized from Sardi's. Winners will be announced May 17 at the Marriott Marquis Times Square.

The awards are among the oldest theatrical honors in America, having been first presented in 1922 and subsequently formalized in 1935. The ceremony culminates in the presentation of the Distinguished Performance Award, which goes to one artist a year and can only be won once in an artist’s lifetime. Recent winners have included Glenda Jackson for Three Tall Women, Ben Platt for Dear Evan Hansen, and Lin-Manuel Miranda for Hamilton.

As previously reported, the 85th annual ceremony will present special honorary awards to current Kiss Me, Kate star Kelli O'Hara, Beeltejuice director Alex Timbers, and Gary: A Sequel to Titus Andronicus playwright Taylor Mac.

*The Broadway revival of The Boys in the Band was deemed ineligible for the Outstanding Revival of a Play category as the production did not accommodate nominators due to the limited run and availability.

As the Distinguished Performance Award can only be awarded to an individual once in an artist's lifetime, the League gave special recognition to six former recipients who appeared in productions this year but were deemed ineligible: the previously mentioned Jackson (King Lear), Stockard Channing (Apologia), Glenn Close (Mother of the Maid), Cherry Jones (The Lifespan of a Fact), Nathan Lane (Gary: A Sequel to Titus Andronicus), John Lithgow (Hillary and Clinton), and Stephen Rea (Cyprus Avenue).
