Alexander Hanson has joined the cast of the English-language world premiere of Florian Zeller’s The Lie. He steps in for the previously announced James Dreyfus, who has withdrawn from the Menier Chocolate Factory production on medical advice.
Hanson will play husband to his real-life spouse, Samantha Bond, in the Lindsay Posner-helmed production, which features an adapted script by Christopher Hampton.
Opening night is still set for September 27 at the London venue, though some preview performances, which were to begin September 14, may be canceled due to the last-minute replacement. Check back for updates.
The play tells the story of Alice (Bond), who discovers her best friend’s husband out with another woman and must decide whether to tell her friend or to lie. Rounding out the company are Tony Gardner and Alexandra Gilbreath.
Hanson previously appeared in Zeller’s The Truth at the Menier (as well as the West End Transfer). His additional credits include A Little Night Music at the venue—plus the production’s West End and Broadway transfers—The Gathered Leaves, The War of the Roses, The Sound of Music, and We Will Rock You.
The play comes on the heels of a broader cultural conversation about Dahl's work and the prejudice that was embedded in many of his most beloved stories.
