Playwrights Horizons has announced a second extension for the world-premiere engagement of Adam Bock’s A Life, directed by Anne Kauffman (Marjorie Prime). The play, which opened October 24 and stars Tony and Emmy winner David Hyde Pierce, has garnered some positive reviews from critics.
Originally scheduled to play through November 13, performances of A Life are now extended to play through December 4 at the company’s Peter Jay Sharp Theater. The cast also includes Marinda Anderson, Brad Heberlee, Nedra McClyde, and Lynne McCollough.
In the new play, Pierce plays Nate Martin, a hopelessly single man in the wake of another failed relationship. He begins to looks to the stars for answers, pouring over astrological charts, until, according to production notes, the message he receives “is shockingly obvious – and totally unpredictable.” Several reviews have referenced the play's unexpected plot twist—Time Out New York theatre critic Adam Feldman called it a “jaw-dropping curve ball.”
”It feels sensationalist the way people are talking about the surprise. It is—[a surprise] within the confines of theatre—but… The thing about it is that it’s unexpected in a play but it’s not unexpected in life,” director Kauffman tells Playbill.com.
“It felt brutally honest,” says Kauffman of the play. “You realize how artificial theatre and art can be sometimes, though not in a bad way. When something that really occurs in life actually happens onstage, you can’t believe it... .”
